The .delay() method is best for delaying between queued jQuery effects. Because it is limited—it doesn’t, for example, offer a way to cancel the delay—.delay() is not a replacement for JavaScript’s native setTimeout function, which may be more appropriate for certain use cases.

Mar 31, 2018 · I ran across this question and I thought I’d provide an update on this topic. jQuery (v1.5+) includes a Deferred model, which (despite not adhering to the Promises/A spec until jQuery 3) is generally regarded as being a clearer way to approach many asynchronous problems. Implementing a $.wait() method using this approach is particularly readable I believe:

setTimeout(  function() {    //do something special  }, 5000);See more on stackoverflowWas this helpful? Thanks! Give more feedback

Jan 15, 2019 · jQuery now defines a when function for this purpose. It accepts any number of Deferred objects as arguments, and executes a function when all of them resolve. That means, if you want to initiate (for example) four ajax requests, then perform an action when they are done, you could do something like this:

Zero or more Thenable objects. If no arguments are passed to jQuery.when(), it will return a resolved Promise. If a single Deferred is passed to jQuery.when(), its Promise object (a subset of the Deferred methods) is returned by the method. Additional methods of the Promise object can be called to attach callbacks, such as deferred.then.

The jQUery “delay()” function in no way provides anything like a general-purpose “wait” facility. It’s a part of the animation system, and only applies to the animation queue. The function always returns immediately, and execution continues without pause.

Jul 12, 2018 · I can’t get the .delay method working in jQuery: $.delay(3000); // not working $(queue).delay(3000); // not working I’m using a while loop to wait until an uncontrolled changing value is greater than or equal to another and I can’t find any way to hault execution for X seconds.

Example 1 – Setting a Timeout Inline. Here is a trivial example of how .wait() can be used to pause execution using a timeout. I’ll use the same example as above.

A page can’t be manipulated safely until the document is “ready.” jQuery detects this state of readiness for you. Code included inside $( document ).ready() will only run once the page Document Object Model (DOM) is ready for JavaScript code to execute.

This method is a shortcut for .on( “load”, handler ). The load event is sent to an element when it and all sub-elements have been completely loaded. This event can be sent to any element associated with a URL: images, scripts, frames, iframes, and the window object.

The fourth syntax waits for the document to be ready but implies (incorrectly) that it waits for images to become ready. Let’s make a JavaScript Wait function. November 10th 2017. Async/await and its underlying use of promises are taking the JS world by storm. Now supported by a majority of client and server JS platforms, callback programming is becoming a thing of the past.

Example #14: wait a timeout after each click before blinking. With the concatenation of two .wait()s we achieve a single short blink. Instead of attaching an event handler explicitly we start an infinite event loop for the “click” event. Repeat loops are always sequential, i.e. the next iteration can start only if the previous one ended.

The $.holdReady() method allows the caller to delay jQuery’s ready event. This advanced feature would typically be used by dynamic script loaders that want to load additional JavaScript such as jQuery plugins before allowing the ready event to occur, even though the DOM may be ready.

With jQuery you select (query) HTML elements and perform “actions” on them. It is good practice to wait for the document to be fully loaded and ready before working with it. This also allows you to have your JavaScript code before the body of your document, in the head section.

As of jQuery 1.9, all the handlers for the jQuery global Ajax events, including those added with the .ajaxComplete() method, must be attached to document. If $.ajax() or $.ajaxSetup() is called with the global option set to false, the .ajaxComplete() method will not fire.

Dec 12, 2011 · The jQuery UI modal dialogs are great add-ons but they don’t necessary fit well when you just have to show a wait message. There are issues with removing the title bar and styling the dialog. BlockUI is another alternative but I find it little hard to style using css. This is how I came up with a wait dialog. I am using two divs here.
